The RSPB uses the results to check population trends and make conservation decisions and, by comparing results with previous years, they can spot if any species are decreasing.
Its good fun and a great way to involve children in a natural history project - mine used to love it when they were younger!
So what did I see on this cold and frosty morning?

Long-tailed Tit 1 (not sure where the rest of the flock were!)
Carrion Crow 1

In the past I've seen more species than this but so far this year only 16 species have visited the garden. The mild weather in January and plentiful food in the countryside (seeds, berries, etc.) has meant that many species have not needed to enter towns in the search for food. Perhaps the predicted cold spell may change that?
I was watching the garden mid-morning so along with a cup of coffee I finished off the remains of this Chocolate and Banana Cake I made yesterday. The cake is scrumptious and well worth the effort (and expense!) - if you fancy baking it yourself check out the BBC Good Food website!

Unusual to have a lone LTT. Glad you got some birds to count.
I haven't got a garden at the moment and really missed doing the count - first time in many years!
It was strange about the LTT being on its own - perhaps the rest of the flock were next door - can't see into their garden too well with the fence, shrubs and trees in the way!
Hope your house purchase goes smoothly and you'll soon have a garden to fill with feeders :D
OOoooooo I so want a piece of that desert. Looks tasty! I like how birders keep a tally of birds around their gardens. I need to start doing this becuase it's really interesting. I don't think I have more than 8 species of birds in my garden, but I could be very wrong....need to start keeping records:)
Rohrerbot - yes the cake was tasty - will be making again :D.
Its well worth keeping records of birds seen around the garden and details about behaviour etc. And over the years you can compare records.
The more you watch the garden the more species you will see - good luck and enjoy!
