We left home just after 10.00 a.m. on Friday, 6th July.

On this journey we managed to spot 6 Red Kites along the A34 in Oxfordshire.
Last stage of the journey through the New Forest.
Just after 1.00 we arrived at the Ferry terminal. It had been a good journey although we didn't stop and approached Lymington from a different direction via Beaulieu as we had left the M27 early due to long delays.
It is always worth picking up this free publication from the ferry terminal.
After lunch it was onto the ferry for the 2.00 p.m. crossing.
Goodbye to Lymington and the mainland for a week.

Arriving in Yarmouth after about 40 minutes (the Lymington-Yarmouth crossing is the shortest and quickest).
Timothy pleased to have finally arrived.
We couldn't arrive at the cottage before 4.00 pm. so we drove into Newport to buy a few essential food items.

Driving across the island en route to Niton where we were staying. Niton is a small village on the south of the island with several good pubs, shop and a lighthouse.
We have stayed in this particular thatched cottage, which dates back to the 1600's, before and it really is delightful - roomy and spacious with lots of character and a large pretty cottage style garden with fairy lights at night. There is an interesting folder in the cottage which is full of photos of the restoration/renovation of the cottage which took place about 20 years ago. A great many features of the original 17th century cottage were revealed and renovated including hidden windows and inglenook fireplaces. I wouldn't normally post so many photos of a holiday cottage but it is so lovely I just wanted to share. It is definitely a place I could move to tomorrow!

The oar above the fireplace in the dining room was found in the roof space when the cottage was re-thatched. If you can make out the sunflowers in the photo this area of the fireplace is an original bread oven.

to a secluded bench.
After unpacking we walked a short way to where the Fish Fryer visits on a Friday evening for fish and chips and for the vegetarians - veggie burger and chips.
Day 2 will include a walk to St Catherine's Point and a walk along Compton Beach to Brook returning along the coastal path.
