Recent Reading

Just a short post on books I have read since I last did a post on recent reading.

I absolutely adored this book by Guy Shrubsole.  Temperate rainforests may once have covered a fifth of Britain but today only fragments remain.  I was fascinated by the amount of mosses, ferns and liverworts that grow in such forests. In fact, I wish there was a temperate rainforest near me as I would so love to visit one. The book is well written and the author has done excellent research.

The King's Sister is the next book in Anne O Brien's series.  It tells the story of Elizabeth of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt. She defies her father's wishes to marry the man of her choice - Sir John Holland, Duke of Exeter.  I really enjoyed this book.

I realised I hadn't read a Wesley Peterson book by Kate Ellis for ages.  I do enjoy her books and this was no exception.

I enjoyed it that much that I went on to read the next two in the series!

I love Tom Denny's stained glass in churches and this book was a Christmas present.  The book contains photos of many of his windows together with a brief explanation of the design of each window. I even got a copy signed by Thomas Denny - it is an expensive book but if you like his windows it is certainly worth buying.

"Upon A White Horse" was another Christmas present. I enjoyed this book - certainly more than I enjoyed his book "Tomb With A View".  It is mainly about prehistoric sites in Britain and Ireland and Peter Ross writes about the landscape and people

I couldn't resist reading another Wesley Peterson book! This was really good. I love the way DI Peterson's cases tie in with excavations being carried out by his friend archaeologist Neil.  The plot as with all the other books was very clever.  Sadly, I think there are only a couple more in the series that I haven't yet read.

I wasn't happy to have an email from Amazon the other day to say they are withdrawing support for older kindles which means you cannot buy new books although you can read ones already downloaded.  It appears my kindle is affected so sadly it seems I shall have to buy a new one for new purchases by the 20th May. To be honest I am hopping mad about this!

Lots of lovely reading. I always enjoy the Kate Ellis Wesley Peterson books, I have a new one of her books reserved at the library but I think it is a Joe Plantagenet one set in Ebury (York). I too had the e-mail re older Kindles, so I too will have to look for a new one. It is very annoying, I've had mine for such a long time and I do enjoy using it as well as borrowing books from the library. some of the Kindles are now quite expensive, I need to read up more about the later ones before I buy a new one:)

Thanks so much Rosie. I must check out the Joe Plantagenet books by Kate Ellis. So sorry you have an older kindle as well. As you say it is SO annoying. I have gone out of my way to look after mine. Mine is a KIndle Fire. I have had a quick look at Amazon and, as you say, they are expensive and (shudders) some come with perishing adverts. I want one as close as possible to the one I have as I like the screen size. Some of the new ones look huge more like ipads! But I use mine all the time for fiction books and I have some non fiction on there as well. They are so handy for holidays as well.

I have a pile of Kindles here - a couple were Keith's and a couple mine . It sounds like Amazon is pulling a fast one but then, technology is always changing isn't it? Some great reading there - don't think I have read any Kate Ellis. Must look on the charity tables and in charity shop for them. I don't blame you for the Thomas Denny indulgence as you will get so much pleasure from it.

Thanks so much BB. I can't tell you how angry I am about Amazon and the need to now buy a new kindle. Kate Ellis Wesley Peterson books are really good in my opinion - there are nearly 30 in the series. I got the book direct from Tom Denny hence the signature :) I need to search out more of his windows. I just drool over them. So beautiful.

Ir's really annoying when you are forced to buy new tech when there is nothing wrong with your old one. Both our desktop Macs are ancient now and run off older operating systems because you can't update them any more. I'm not going to spend a thousand quid for a new one whilst this is working fine!

About temperature rainforests, I have never been to one either but they look really interesting, the ones that are dripping in mosses etc.

Thanks so much Mandy. Yes I am SO annoyed as I love my kindle fire and have looked after it as well as I can. We had to have a new desktop recently as the windows it ran was no longer supported and it started playing up :(

The book on Temperate Rainforests is really good. I'd heard of Wistman's Wood but I learned so much from reading the book. They are a wonderful habitat and it is so sad only fragments remain.
