Worcester Elephants Art Trail - The Farewell Event

Last Friday D and I went to Worcestershire County Cricket Ground to view The Farewell Event of the Worcester Elephants Big Parade Art Trail.

Throughout the summer 66 decorated elephant sculptures (30 large plus 36 smaller) have formed a free art trail round Worcester's city centre and open spaces.  It it is a Wild in Art Event organised by Sir Richard's hospice to raise funds.

Now the Big Parade has finished all the elephants  were on display over a couple of weekends at Worcestershire County Cricket Ground.

I allowed two hours for the journey but actually it only took us just over an hour to get to Worcester and park next to the cricket ground. After sandwiches and a flask of tea in the car we made our way to the display.

I was relieved that most of the event was out of doors and to be honest there were only about a dozen or so other people there plus volunteers. I think avoiding going at the weekend was a good idea!

Unfortunately, the elephants weren't labelled so I have done some research on the internet and managed to find the names and artists (apologies if any are incorrect).

"Leave the Herd Behind" by Kathleen Smith - I really liked this one too with the butterflies.

"Lucy Lavender" by Lizzie Art

The baby elephants were on display in the marquee but I am still so nervous about anywhere indoors that I only had a quick look.

I did buy a few souvenirs - a tea towel for the caravan, a small toy elephant which I will show you when it is named and a fridge magnet which I managed to forget to put in a bag and left behind I think :(

All the elephants were really lovely and the artists so talented but I think my favourite was "Inky the Elephant".

Do you have a favourite?

The photos above were taken by me with the Panasonic Lumix FZ330 bridge camera and the following pictures were taken by D with the Canon SX50HS.

It was a really lovely display and I am so glad we went.  Sadly, traffic on the way home was awful and it took two hours ten minutes!  We were half way to the caravan and I really wished we had stuck to the original plan to carry on there and stop for a night or two.

I hope everyone is staying safe and well.

Gosh, such a lot of work went into those. I liked Inky too, and the sparkly Music Maker, and the one with the Canal scenes on.

Rosie - Thanks so much - we did the same thing ie went to Farewell Event with Birmingham Hooting Owls and then another year bears :)

Bovey Belle - Thanks so much. As you say so much work has gone into each one :)

I see D is like a friend of mine who loves taking photos at an angle! I had a good chuckle over some of these decorated elephants! I rather liked the panda, and was happy to see so many elephants in wellies (although I have hardly worn my wellies since moving). Inky is the most amazing though. Lovely post.

Millymollymandy - Thanks so much - glad you liked the elephants - sorry rather an overload on pics!! You are fortunate - I always make sure wellies in the car!!! Yes D does like his photos at an angle - have started now sometimes to do it myself :)

Wow, RR, what a fantastic display ... and such creativity. Favourites include 'Leave the herd behind' (this seems to take on a new and poignant meaning in these days of herd immunity; I love the butterflies, too), 'Worcester in Porcelain' (exquisite) and 'Hive in the Herd'(beautiful and worthwhile). I look forward to seeing Timothy's new elephant companion!

It is lovely to see them on parade. I only got a chance to see a few when I was in Worcester.

Cherry Pie - Thank you - I am sure they would have looked even better in their original locations :)

The Quacks of Life - Thanks so much. Sadly, I think the event was only on for two weekends? Although elephants were on display in many locations in Worcester in the summer.
