September Visit to Herefordshire - Part 3: Leominster and Monkland Cheese Dairy

On the Thursday we went into Leominster - below a photo of the super Roundabout Stationery Shop. A few purchases were made :)

There are a lot of antique shops in Leominster!

There is a lot of renovation work going on at the moment in Leominster Town Centre to renew and improve the High Street and Corn Square etc.

We had a look round Rossiters bookshop and I bought a few Christmas presents.  Then onto the Flower Gallery - I love the autumn wreaths hanging on the door but in the end we just bought a heather for the small garden at the caravan.

This is Corn Square  as it looks at the moment! - the post topper on the postbox made me smile!!

There is a good model shop in Leominster where we often buy jigsaws.

Telephone box topper

These knitted toys reminded me of my childhood - especially Bill and Ben!

We drove onto the village of Monkland and visited Monkland Dairy Cheese Shop - cheeses were bought :) and then we had a cup of tea and some of their delicious Herefordshire Apple Cake.  We enjoyed it that much that I bought a Monkland Cafe recipe book which has a recipe for this cake.

On the return journey I stopped off at All Saints Church, Monkland to have a look around as it is a church I haven't visited before and I'll write about that in the next post.

All photos taken by me with the Panasonic Lumix FZ330 bridge camera.  (I don't particularly rate my photos but if anyone wishes to use one of mine or my son's I would be grateful for an email first - thanks)

  1. It looks a pleasant little town, even with the roadworks. I love those knitted toys - things which I had in childhood but had completely forgotten. How could I have forgotten about Noddy; I carried him everywhere!

    1. John - Thanks so much. Leominster has some very good independent shops :) I loved the knitted toys too. I still have my daughter's Noddy toy!

  2. The yarn bombers are certainly keeping topical!
I am sure it won't happen in Leominster, but Fishguard town centre was brought to its knees with badly timed roadwork disruptions in the height of tourist season, and the shopping centre has never fully recovered. Sad but true. It's such a lovely place too.
I enjoyed seeing the knitted toys, as you say, many childhood memories. I bet Timothy was happy to see them too.

    1. Rustic Pumpkin - Thanks so much! Sorry to hear about Fishguard Town Centre. Sadly there are a few shops shutting in Leominster but not all due to the roadworks. I am ashamed to say I left Timothy at the caravan - he was not happy!!!!

  3. I really enjoyed your post and reading about the lovely shops in Leominster, glad you were able to make some purchases ready for the festive season. The apple cake looks wonderful I hope you will make a few lovely things to eat from the recipe book. Those post box toppers and the knitted toys are super. I too remember Bill and Ben, also Sooty and Sweep and do I see Captain Pugwash? I'll look forward to more on your church visit:)

    1. Rosie - Thanks so much. I seem to have a lot of presents bought for D for Christmas but no-one else!!! I think the cake was tastier than the Dorset Apple Cake which I make which is a BBC Good Food recipe and I shall be trying the one in the Monklands book! I remember so many of those characters from my childhood too! Not sure about Captain Pugwash but I am sure you are right. I will check the photo again :)

    1. Thanks Pete. Monkland Dairy Shop (few miles from Leominster) worth a visit for cheese and cake/scones. I think they do scones.

    1. Thank you CherryPie. I am sure you have visited Leominster Priory but the Grange if you haven't been is also worth a visit.
