Tickled Pink!

The mini wildflower meadow towards the top of the garden is a mass of pink flowers at the moment as the red campion comes into flower.

Buttercups, ribwort plaintain and tufted vetch are just starting to flower. On warm sunny days the wildflower meadow is a magnet to hoverflies, butterflies and bumble bees.

This is a photo I took in early May when the only flowers to be seen were a few bluebells and cowslips.

Red Campion(Silene dioica)

Alternative names for red campion include robin-in-the-hedge, soldiers' buttons, robin flower and adder's flower (snake bites were once treated by the crushed seeds).
The first part of the scientific name refers to Silenus, a merry woodland god from Greek mythology whereas the second part means "two houses" because each campion flower is either male or female
