If we go again will ask you directions!! :)
Church well worth a look round (the windows are superb).
thanks so much for the link to the Lancashire lady - I will certainly check out her blog!Ragged Robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14090463834740346114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320975515799225099.post-60440064382837277262016-10-17T20:35:43.900+01:002016-10-17T20:35:43.900+01:00Having been round the Castle and done the walk tha...Having been round the Castle and done the walk that takes you round the back of the grounds on a lovely wood walk, I have never stepped inside the church !
We were there a week last Thursday, and we always sit in front of the church on the seats looking down the high street for a coffee.
So it was nice to see what's inside.
Been to Pendel a few times in the past. I had exactly the same thought re: Anchorites (I always tend to think of practicalities!!!) I've seen a similar font lid somewhere else as well but I can't remember either - suspect it was a cathedral? Will check it out later as I won't rest now until I remember!Ragged Robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14090463834740346114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320975515799225099.post-44638601573171537522016-10-11T08:17:08.764+01:002016-10-11T08:17:08.764+01:00Finally getting time to return to blogland and &qu...Finally getting time to return to blogland and "go around the optics" so to speak. What a lovely church - I have seen one of those amazing font "lids" somewhere else but can't remember for the life of me where. Anchorites must have been really whiffy, with nowhere to wash or . . . "go"! I expect they had Vitamin D deficiency too . . .

It's a loooong time since we were last in Pendle. The church looks lovely and though I used to visit Skipton quite often when I was child I have never been to the church. Unfortunately I rarely get across to the western side of Yorkshire these days but hopefully next time I do I will have time to explore this interesting looking church :-)

I don't know much about the whole Pendle witches but I do know that Pendle Hill used to be one of the best places to see Dotterels in spring!

Hope you are well and my kindest regards to all :-)Grosmontinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15021561871348219451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320975515799225099.post-18125572232729089012016-10-04T20:07:50.294+01:002016-10-04T20:07:50.294+01:00Wendy - thanks so much Wendy - the church was very...Wendy - thanks so much Wendy - the church was very interesting- it even had a shop and I finally got round to treating myself to a wooden carved church mouse which I'd talked myself out of at Tewkesbury and another church whose name escapes me! I totally agree about the Anchorites - living in such an enclosed space :(

Do hope we can go back to Pendle - I will google the Matthew Hopkins witch hunt and read up on it. So sad as you say to think of what used to go on and how many innocent women may have died.Ragged Robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14090463834740346114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320975515799225099.post-88508396162585311022016-10-04T18:05:30.201+01:002016-10-04T18:05:30.201+01:00The church has so much interesting history, althou...The church has so much interesting history, although I always feel claustrophobic at the thought of how Anchorites lived. I don't know how they did it - they must have had so much faith. The windows there are beautiful.
The Pendle museum looks fascinating. We have our own stories of 'witches' locally with the Matthew Hopkins witch hunt and it is sad to think of the hysteria at that time and the damage it did.
