Latest Garden Moths

A short break from holiday blog posts to catch up on Garden moths - I do wish there were more hours in the day so I could catch up on everything!!

I put out the moth trap on Saturday night, 6th July, for the Garden Moth Scheme and caught a lot of new species for the year and one garden "tick"!

Buff Arches - this must be one of my favourite moths - the markings are just superb :)

And here it is waking up!

Barred Yellow - a new species for the garden and what a gorgeous moth - 3 photos again as its so lovely. Sorry for poor quality though - it was a very lively moth and I stood no chance of a photo out of the pot!

Willow Beauty - (I hope - for some reason I really struggle identifying this species from other similar species) again new for year

Common Marbled Carpet

Common Carpet - new for year

Riband Wave - new for year

Uncertain - new for year

One of the micro plume moths - Amblyptilia acanthadactyla

Far more moths escaped than I managed to pot and, despite New Year Resolutions to try and identify micros this year, I released most of them just keeping a few.

I think this is Garden Grass-veneer (a micro and would be new for year)

I am still working on the id of this worn macro

Another micro - despite the new Micro Moth book - I am really struggling - Phycita roborella??????

The trouble is with micros they are very lively even after a few hours of chilling in the fridge and too tiny to get decent photos

Please let me know if any of the above identifications are wrong and any help on unidentified species would be hugely appreciated!!!

The barred yellow is lovely. We're getting similar species here and I so agree about the micros! They are my next challenge :-)

Countryside Tales - It is just beautiful :) I still find it amazing what is flying around at night unseen in gardens! Good luck with the micros - they are difficult!!!

Some great moths, especially that lovely Buff Arches :-) I also had the same problem photographing a Barred Yellow last week too !

I'm not sure but is that unidentified macro one of the Marbled Minor species ?

Those first three images are stunning; people say that moths are all boringly brown but they clerly are not.

The Barred Yellow is beautiful and I love the Buff Arches; its wings appear to fold over like a cloak.

David Turner - Thank you. I really didn't want to part with the Buff Arches - so stunning. But he or she is now happily flying around somewhere outside :)

Glad you managed to trap a Barred Yellow too - very lively species :)

Thanks for help with unid macro - yes I thought Marbled Minor too but not sure. I am not very good with worn moths. Will check photo again tomorrow against the guide.

Toffeeapple - Thank you so much :) I am still astounded (after several years of trapping) at how beautiful they are :)

SeagullSuzie - Thank you - the names of moths are just superb :)

Wendy - Thank you - I may not be catching many moths this year but I must admit I seem to be getting far more interesting and colourful species than usual :)

Chris Rohrer - Many thanks - they are so lovely :) Believe me I struggle with id still!!! As for micro moths (the tiny ones) I keep meaning to try and start identifying seriously and then give up - takes immense effort and huge amounts of time!!
